“There’s a time and a place”…..SOMEWHERE ;-)
Mount Gay claim the title of oldest rum producer in the world dating back to 1703. But the brand has only actually existed for about 100years.

Mount Gay Master Distiller Alan Smith (above). He explained that if you eat enough molasses it puts lead in your pencil if you know what I mean.
Black Barrel…matured 2-7 years. Pot and column still, more pot than column. 42% ABV
Bananas aplenty, hints of toffee and spice. Quite sharp and rough initially but mellows nicely as you swirl it around your mouth. Vanilla is dominant with lingering fresh banana and emerging toffee or caramel. A medium finish that has a burn that disappears quickly. A good rum for cocktails I think.

The rum has aged column still rum added to aged pot still rum, which is then further aged in charred Bourbon barrels, hence the name.
Pure single Column Still Mount Gay.
6 years of ageing. Light, hints of toffee and vanilla. Quite a mellow flavour, not at all rough but lacks a bit of fire. Oak develops.
Pure Single Copper Pot.
Much more powerful and more depth of aroma. An intense feeling when nosed compared to the column due to the increased congeners. More heavy with oak and fire and a long lingering dry finish. Very nice indeed!
Mount Gay XO Cask Strength being released imminently. 63% ABV, 3,000 bottles worldwide at £150 / bottle. 900 bottles in the UK.

A big thanks for a great seminar.

I'm Simon, the person behind RumShopBoy — exploring the incredible world of Rum, Ron, Rhum and Cachaça.
I've been writing about, tasting and collecting rum for many years, with a particular interest in the diversity of production styles, traditions and flavours found around the world.
RumShopBoy is all about honest opinions, independent reviews and helping people discover better rum. Whether you're completely new to rum or already have a well-stocked collection, I want to make the category easier to understand, explore and enjoy.
My content covers individual rum reviews, affordable and beginner-friendly recommendations, Rum Knowledge videos and explorations of rum-producing countries and styles from around the world.
Appleton was where my own rum journey really began, and Jamaican and Barbadian rum remain important reference points for me. Foursquare is another particular favourite, and I'm an advocate of Luca Gargano's proposed reclassification of rum as a useful way of understanding how rum is actually produced.

Away from rum, I'm a Liverpool supporter and season ticket holder, and a long-time Pet Shop Boys fan — which provided some of the inspiration for the RumShopBoy name.
