5 Rums That Show How Diverse Rum Can Be | World Explorer #1

Rum is one of the most diverse spirits in the world.

Different raw materials, fermentation methods, stills, ageing techniques and regional traditions can produce dramatically different styles of rum.

That’s exactly what my new World Explorer series is all about.

In World Explorer #1, I’ve selected five very different bottles that demonstrate just how broad the world of rum can be.

🥃 Black Tot Finest Caribbean

A blend bringing together rums from several Caribbean countries and a great example of how different rum traditions can work together in a single bottle.

🥃 Appleton Estate 8 Year Old Reserve – Jamaica

A classic Jamaican rum combining pot and column still distillates, demonstrating the character and balance that Appleton Estate does so well.

🥃 Rhum J.M Blanc 50 – Martinique

A completely different direction. A white rhum Agricole produced from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, bringing grassy, vegetal and cane-driven flavours into the selection.

🥃 Foursquare Exceptional Cask Selection 2011 – Barbados

A superb example of Barbados rum from Foursquare, combining pot and column still distillation and demonstrating what careful maturation can achieve without needing unnecessary additions.

🥃 970 Reserva 6 Años – Madeira

Made from sugarcane juice on the Portuguese island of Madeira, this takes us somewhere very different again and shows another fascinating side of the wider rum world.

These five bottles aren’t intended to represent everything rum can be. That would be impossible.

Instead, they’re five very different expressions chosen to demonstrate why rum is such an incredibly varied and fascinating spirit to explore.

And this is only the beginning.

Future World Explorer videos will take us to even more countries, production styles and traditions as we continue exploring just how diverse rum really is.
