I don’t usually make videos in response to online articles…
…but this one really got under my skin.
A popular “Best Caribbean Rums” article mixes genuine rum with flavoured products, repeats some questionable claims and leaves readers with a very misleading picture of what rum actually is.
In this video I break down exactly what the article gets wrong, explain why these distinctions matter and discuss how misinformation like this can confuse people who are just starting their rum journey.
If you’ve ever wondered what really qualifies as rum, or you’re simply curious why this article made me so angry, I’d love to hear what you think.

My first rum was Appleton and that is generally the benchmark I use for comparing rums along with Foursquare. My collection now has (in 2023) over 600 different rums and that number is continually growing.
I am an advocate of the Gargano rum re-categorisation.
As well as rum, I am a big Liverpool fan (and season ticket holder) and love Pet Shop Boys (hence the blog name).
I have a Level 1 WSET qualification in Spirits, Level 2 with Distinction. I also have Level 1 WSET wine and Level 2 with Distinction qualifications.
