Pure Single Rum: 100% Pot Still from a single distillery
ABV Hydrometer Test: 50% ABV @ 20°
The latest “The Duchess” rum in The Hummingbird Series
is from the Port Mourant pot still in Guyana,
aged for 27 years and bottled at cask strength of 50.1%.
The Duchess have chosen a 27 year old Guyanese rum for their latest bottling, distilled at Uitvlugt. This release is limited to just 189 bottles and is from cask number 5, distilled in 1993 and bottled in 2020 at cask strength of 50.1%. As usual with The Duchess, this rum is free of additives.
The Uitvlugt distillery in Guyana was founded around 1750. In 2000, Uitvlugt closed its doors but the distillery’s equipment including its wooden pot stills, were transferred to the currently operating Diamond Distillery.
The Duchess Guyana Uitvlugt – 1993 – 27yo is a Pure Single Rum:
100% Pot Still from a single distillery.
As usual, The Duchess has commissioned artistic multi-talent Hans Dillesse to design the beautiful hummingbird image on the bottle’s label.
The slightly squat bottle has plenty of useful rummy info on the label. The rum was distilled in 1993, bottled in 2020 from cask 5 that yielded 189 bottles at cask strength of 50.1% ABV. It is non-chill filtered and is a natural colour.
In my glass the natural colour is quite pale, slightly golden. On the nose are dried fruits, something pastry-esque and liquorice. Further nosings reveal nutmeg and a slightly medicinal note, reminiscent of eucalyptus.
Taste, Initial-middle 34/40
The entry has a touch of spice – it is tongue-tingling. Dried fruits, smoky grass and liquorice, too. Into the mid-palate, the spicy profile continues – there is pepper and ginger and more liquorice.
Taste, Middle/Throat 30/40
The rum is medium bodied at this point. The peppery spice continues to grow, thoroughly tingling the entire mouth. It is not rough but has some potency. A plummy eau-de-vie and liquorice here make it bitter.
Very long and lingering end to this rum. Several minutes after swallowing, the pepper and dryness continue to build and dominate. There is a hint of oak and plenty of power but it is still not fiery.
As usual, The Duchess like to bottle some rarities
and top quality juice, such as this.
The ageing has softened the power of the Port Mourant still very well here without flavours being lost. It has power, but is smooth, not fiery. There is an oak presence, but it is not overpowering, instead it brings pepper and liquorice to the party.
If you are looking to buy this rum, head over to Zeewijck.
27 year old rum is not cheap. But, I think for around half the price, you can pick up some other bargain examples of Uitvlugt, albeit not as well aged. No doubt about the quality of the rum though.
